Hoi An to educate primary school kids on heritage

A 150-page heritage education document set will be included in the curriculum for students at primary schools in Hoi An city of the central province of Quang Nam from the 2021-22 academic year.

- A 150-page heritage education document set will beincluded in the curriculum for students at primary schools in Hoi An city of thecentral province of Quang Nam from the 2021-22 academic year.

Thecentre said compiled by historians and cultural researchers from the city’s centrefor Cultural Heritage Management and Preservation, the document set willcomprise 10 subjects related to the heritage of Hoi An including theJapanese Bridge, communal houses, pagodas, Chinese clubs, families’ancestors worship houses, old houses, whale tombs, crafts villages, folk artperformances and visual studies for students from grade 1 to grade 5.

Primary school students will study two subjects in three periods including afield study trip to see heritage and a visual lecture.

Hoi An ancient town, a UNESCO-recognised world heritage site, has more than1,000 houses between 100 and 200 years old.

The city and local residents have preserved ancient tombs of Japanese expats,Fujian and Jiao Zhou clubs of Chinese and French buildings that show theharmony between the local community and foreign merchants 400 years ago.

The 400-year-old Japanese Bridge – a popular destination and cultural symbol inHoi An – which was built and named by Lord Nguyen Phuc Chu from the NguyenDynasty in 1719, is one of the subjects primary school students in Hoi An willstudy this year.

Last year, Hoi An launched a campaign to raise awareness of good-naturedbehaviour and hospitality among the community to boost tourism.

Local residents are encouraged to maintain tranquility and not use single-useplastic bags, straws or cups.

Walking streets have also been inplace in the city since 2004./.
