– The Red River Deltaprovince of Hung Yen has raised the alarm over environmental pollution as manylocal companies continue to discharge untreated wastewater despite strictpunishments by authorities.

After 42 investigations conducted in the firstseven months of 2018, the provincial Department of Natural Resources andEnvironment has detected many companies discharging wastewater with residualsubstances exceeding regulatory standards. Although authorities imposed harshsentences, those companies deliberately committed and repeated violationsseveral times.

According to Tran Dang Anh, Deputy Director of theprovincial Department of Natural Resources and Environment, 26 companies havebeen found violating regulations on environmental protection. AOCC VietnamCompany and Thuan Phat Packaging Company, for example, were fined more than 400million VND (17,200 USD) each for illegal waste disposal.

Wastewater samples collected from the sewagedischarged by these companies show excessive levels of pollutants includingNH4 , Coliform and BOD5.

Phu Sy Nutrition in An Thi district dischargeduntreated wastewater ten times with levels of Coliform bacteria 80 times higherthan regulated.

The wastewater contaminates the province’s riverand canal systems, especially the Bac Hung Hai irrigation across districts of VanLam, My Hao, Van Giang and Yen My. Vast areas of agricultural land in thosedistricts have also been abandoned for a long time as no plants or animals cansurvive the pollution.

The provincial People’s Committee has tasked theDepartment of Natural Resources and Environment to collaborate with relatedagencies to tighten management on companies violating regulations ofenvironmental protection and suspend the operations of companies which commitviolations more than once. The lead recycling village of Dong Mai and plasticrecycling village of Minh Khai in Van Lam district are also put under controlin an effort to restore the environment.-VNA
