India and Myanmar are making every effort to strengthen their bilateral ties through growing cultural and trade exchange activities.

Hanoi (VNA) – India and Myanmar are making every effort to strengthentheir bilateral ties through growing cultural and trade exchange activities.

The statement was made by Indian President Nath Kovind on December 11 duringhis four-day trip to the Southeast Asian country from December 10-14.

He expressed his satisfaction at achievements recorded in bilateral relationsand voiced his support for Myanmar’s economic recovery.

Kovind said that both the countries share a unique emotional connection owing totheir close cultural ties and heritage of Buddhism. 

Myanmar is now home to about 2 million people of Indian origin who act as anorganic link between the two nations.

With the present government of Myanmar, India expects bilateralcooperation in the fields of commerce, defence, disaster relief and developmentprojects will reach to the strategic level in the region. At present, two-way tradebetween India and Myanmar hovers around 1.6 billion USD. 

India's project assistance to Myanmar is close to 1 billionUSD in terms of grants and about 750 million USD in terms of lines of credit.-VNA
