Indonesia, RoK develop environmentally friendly businesses

Indonesia and the Republic of Korea are developing environmentally friendly small-medium enterprises (SMEs) or green businesses that emphasize efforts to reduce emissions in product processing, reported local media.

SMEsshould participate in cutting industrial emissions by implementingenvironmentally friendly technologies, said Deputy for Organisation at theCooperatives and SME Ministry Meliadi Sembiring.

"TheSME sector is expected to be more creative and innovative to be able to survivecompetition and run their businesses in environmentally friendly ways," AntaraNews Agency quoted Meliadi at the opening of the first Indonesia-Korea GreenBusiness Forum on December 6 as saying.

TheIndonesia-Korea Business Forum is the first event held by the Green BusinessCenter (GBC) with the support of the ASEM SMEs Eco Innovation Centre (ASEIC) ofthe RoK and the Ministry of Cooperatives and SMEs.

"GreenBusiness Centre is an institutional form of cooperation between Indonesia andSouth Korea and it serves as a business incubator for SMEs both in Indonesiaand Korea. GBC is dedicated to incubating, consulting, and assisting SMEs indeveloping business and industry so as to accelerate the pace of businesspotential through green business innovation," Meliadi explained.

Asof now, there are 11 tenants under the GBC, three of them Indonesian companiesand eight Korean, according to Meliadi.

Thisforum is to increase the commitment and participation of SMEs and increasetheir knowledge, concept and application of environmentally friendlyindustries, Meliadi said.

Itis very important as a platform to exchange information related toenvironmentally friendly industries between the two countries, said Jang-jeanKang from the Indonesia-Korea Joint Secretariat for Economic Development.

Indonesiais the fourth largest carbon dioxide emission-generating country in the world,Jang-jean said, and hoped that it would, therefore, make its industries moreenvironmentally friendly.-VNA
