Jakarta(VNA) – Indonesia plans to increase investment in maritime and aquatic sectorsto 6.3 trillion rupiah (484.6 million USD) in 2018, according to NilantoPerbowo, an official of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries.

By the third quarterof 2017, investment in the sectors reached 4.4 trillion rupiah, with capitalpoured into fishing and aquatic farming nearly doubling that of the same timein 2016.

Meanwhile, investment infish processing was 2.2 trillion rupiah, up 0.4 percent year on year.

The majority of thecapital came from foreign countries such as Singapore, the Philippines,Belgium, China and Japan. Of the total investment, 73 percent was funneled intofish processing.

According to theministry, this is part of the country’s efforts to reduce the number offishermen living in poverty and industrialise the seafood sector in 2018.

This year, theministry will focus on ensuring that all maritime and aquatic programmes willreach their goals set in the middle-term national development plan.-VNA
