Int’l conference talks heritage’s role in sustainable development
Managers, experts and scientists shared their views on cultural and natural heritage’s contributions to Vietnam's sustainable development as well as socio-economic development in localities at an international conference in Hanoi on March 24.
Hanoi (VNA) - Managers, experts andscientists shared their views on cultural and natural heritage’s contributions to Vietnam's sustainabledevelopment as well as socio-economic development in localities at aninternational conference in Hanoi on March 24.
The conference, themed “Promoting the role of worldcultural and natural heritage in sustainable development in Vietnam,” wasjointly held by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Vietnam NationalCommission for UNESCO and the Hanoi People’s Committee.
It formed part of activities marking 35 years sinceVietnam ratified the 1972 Convention Concerning the Protection of the WorldCultural and Natural Heritage.
The participants reviewed the protection and promotionof world cultural and natural heritage values in Vietnam, and exchangedexperience in state management and the optimisation of world heritage values inlocal socio-economic development.
Vice Chairman of the Hanoi Municipal People’s Committee HaMinh Hai said after the Thang Long Imperial Citadel won the UNESCO recognitionin 2010, the Government, ministries, agencies and local authorities have focusedon preserving the site and promoting its historical, cultural, architectural andartistic values.
Communications activities have been stepped up, with arange of exhibitions which attracted crowds of visitors, he said, adding thatmany research studies have also been carried out.
At the conference, heritage management boards lookedinto obstacles to heritage preservation and management, and how to balancebetween conservation and development.
Present at the event, Director of the UNESCO WorldHeritage Centre Lazare Eloundou Assomo spoke of steps to remove the difficultiesand shared international experience in this regard.
Some lessons were drawn in the conference, such asperfecting legal foundations in heritage management, raising public awarenessof the work, enhancing environmental protection, strengthening international cooperation,improving capacity of heritage managers, and applying IT in heritage managementand conservation./.
The People’s Committee of central Da Nang city on March 1 received a certificate recognising 78 “ma nhai” steles on its Ngu Hanh Son Mountain as part of documentary heritage under the Memory of the World Committee for Asia and the Pacific.

The ambassador noted that among the 300,000 Vietnamese residing in the RoK, around 3,000 are living in Pyeongtaek and contributing actively to the local economy. Ho expressed his hope that the local authorities will continue support the overseas Vietnamese community in the city.
This is the first time since the adoption of the Convention that a country has served two consecutive terms on the Committee. The outcome shows the trust and recognition that member states have given Vietnam for its efforts and achievements in carrying out and promoting the Convention, as well as for its active role, strong standing, and growing credibility at UNESCO.

Creative cultural festivals are fast emerging as a new catalyst for tourism development in Vietnam, as localities increasingly invest in these vibrant events on a more systematic and larger scale.
This marks the first time Vietnam has hosted a continental-level Muay event which will feature competitions across 28 weight categories in combat and eight performance categories.
Coming to the Vietnamese booth, visitors had the chance to take part in a bamboo dance, a workshop on painting woven bamboo or rattan, or quizzes about Vietnam.
These are impressive achievements, not only showing the efforts and prowess of Vietnamese paddlers but also serving as proof of the sports sector’s strategic and systematic investment.
