Jailbait wins top award at Vietnamese film festival

The film Em Chua 18 (Jailbait), directed by Le Thanh Son, won the Golden Lotus prize for best feature film at the 20th Vietnamese Film Festival in central Da Nang city on November 28.

Da Nang (VNA) - The film Em Chua 18 (Jailbait),directed by Le Thanh Son, won the Golden Lotus prize for best feature film atthe 20th Vietnamese Film Festival in central Da Nang city on November 28.

Two films, The House Maid and Father andSon, took two Silver Lotus awards at the ceremony, held at the city’s TrungVuong Theatre.

Kathy Uyen, who acted in the Vietnamese movie Jailbait,was named best actress, while Quy Binh from the film I’ll Wait,took the best actor award.

In the documentary category, the film Live and Tell,directed by Nguyen Hoang Lam, won the Golden Lotus prize.

Two Silver Lotus awards went to films Home Coming and VietnamUnder Subsidy.

A Solution for Coastal Erosion, by director Phung Ngoc Tu, won the Golden prize for the bestscientific film division, while the film Growing Sperm for Infertilityin Males took Silver prize.

The Mannequin was awarded theGolden Lotus prize for best animated film, while Fugitive tookthe Silver Lotus.

Actress Ha My was named best supporting actress for her workon The Girl from Yesterday, while Nhan Phuc Vinh took bestsupporting actor for the film The Way Station.

The organising committee also presented prizes for the best soundand music, the best artist, the best cameraman, the best film script incategories of documentary, science, feature and animation, the jury’s award andthe best film voted by audiences.

More than 4,000 viewers in the central region enjoyed a week-longfilm festival screening Vietnam’s 129 best new and old films spanning genres offeature, documentary, scientific and animated categories.

The southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau will host the 21stVietnamese Film Festival next year.

ASEAN Awards

The film, A Yellow Bird, from Singapore won the BestFilm Award at the first ASEAN Film Awards, while main actor Sivakumar Palakrishnanwas named Best Actor at the ceremony.

The film, directed by K. Rajagopal, features Silva (actorSivakumar), a Singaporean Indian man released after years in prison forsmuggling. Unable to find forgiveness from his mother, he searches for his ex-wifeand daughter.

“I would like to thanks Vietnam for creating the opportunity inthe ASEAN Film Awards,” Sivakumar Palakrishnan said at the awards ceremony.

Mary Joy Apostol from the Philippines, who starred in thefilm Birdshot, bagged the Best Actress prize.

Wicaksono Wisnu Legowo of Indonesia was named Best Director forthe film Turah.    

The three members of the ASEAN Awards jury were Jonathan Hyong-joonKim, a director from the Republic of Korea; Roger Garcia, director of theInternational Film Festival Hong Kong; and Polish director Karolina Bielawska.

The first ASEAN Film Awards, an initiative of Vietnam, drewthe participation of the films Adrift (Malaysia), Birdshot (thePhilippines), Angel of Eden (Myanmar), Descendant (Brunei)and Yellow Bird (Singapore), Benevolence of theContemporary Mother (Cambodia), Swan Lifts Turtle (Laos), Turah (Indonesia), Bythe Time It Gets Dark (Thailand) and Da Co Hoai Lang (HelloVietnam)   

The event also marks the 50th founding anniversary of the Associationof Southeast Asian Nations, strengthening friendship and solidarity amongdifferent nationalities.-VNA

🌄 Vietnamese culture takes centre stage in Korean city

🃏 Vietnam re-elected to 2005 UNESCO Convention’s Intergovernmental Committee

This is the first time since the adoption of the Convention that a country has served two consecutive terms on the Committee. The outcome shows the trust and recognition that member states have given Vietnam for its efforts and achievements in carrying out and promoting the Convention, as well as for its active role, strong standing, and growing credibility at UNESCO.
