Kon Tum (VNA) – Kon Tum provinc💯e, home to the largest forest area in the Central Highlands, is now on full alert for fires.
More than 540,000 hectares of natural forests and 57,000 hectares of planted forests are concentrated in the province.
Due to a serious drought in the region, the high risk of fire is looming over 100,000 hectares of local woodland, more than half of which are commercial forests.
The most vulnerable localities, including Dak To, Ngoc Hoi, Sa Thay and Kon Ray districts, are carrying out round-the-clock patrols and monitoring forest access closely.
Meanwhile, nearly 5,000 people divided into 749 groups have been mobilised ready to take part in extinguishing fires at any time.
By the end of February, due to early drought, farming stopped across 2,865 hectares of rice fields in the region, with over 1,100 hectares facing high risk of being completely ruined.
The drought is forecast to get worse in the next two months, which may lead to a widespread water crisis and forest fires.-VNA
