Localities nationwide launch New Year tree planting festival

Many provinces and cities across Vietnam, on February 25, simultaneously held the annual New Year tree planting festival, initiated by the late President Ho Chi Minh in 1960.

Hanoi (VNA) – Many provinces and cities acrossVietnam, on February 25, simultaneously held the annual New Year tree planting festival,initiated by the late President Ho Chi Minh in 1960.

In the northern province of Bac Ninh, the Ministry ofNatural Resources and Environment and provincial authorities launched thefestival, planting close to 57,000 trees. The province aims to 200,000 trees ofdifferent kinds in 2018.

Meanwhile, the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union CentralCommittee used the green event to kick off its 2018 month of youth in Ha Longcity, the northern province of Quang Ninh, which spotlighted innovation andstartups. On the day, local youths bedded out casuarina trees over 5 hectaresof land, inaugurated a youth garden, and joined environmental cleaningactivities along beaches and residential areas.

A similar launch of the youth month and tree-plantingfestival took place in the central coastal city of Da Nang with theparticipation of 800 young people. The day saw 5,000 pine trees planted alongcoastal Nguyen Tat Thanh road in Thanh Khe district.

The central province of Nghe An also held a similar ceremonyat the local national historical site Truong Buong to join the youth and tree-plantingactivities.-VNA

💃 Vietnam pioneers use of AI and remote sensing to monitor seawater quality

According to Dr. Vu Anh Tuan, Deputy Director General of the Vietnam Space Centre and head of the project, this is the first study in Vietnam to simultaneously employ Sentinel-2 satellite data, advanced machine learning algorithms, and the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud computing platform to model and monitor key seawater quality parameters.

💞 Vietnam ramps up plastic waste recycling, reuse, treatment efforts

In 2019, Quang Ninh became one of the first localities in Vietnam to launch a province-wide campaign against plastic waste, mobilising the participation of the political system, the business sector, and the general public. Other localities—such as Hai Phong, Da Nang, Binh Duong, and Ho Chi Minh City—have also effectively implemented waste-sorting initiatives at source, along with models for plastic-free markets and urban areas.
