Long An (VNA) - The Mekong Delta province of Long An plans moreerosion-prevention works along major rivers and canals to protect people’slives and properties.
They include embankments of 1.9km, 1.6km and 1.2km along the Vam Co Dong, BaoDinh and Vam Co Tay rivers in thickly populated areas impacted by climatechange.
The three are expected to cost 720 billion VND (31 million USD) and will bebuilt in 2022 - 24, according to the province Department of Agriculture andRural Development.
Besides embankments, the projects will also include infrastructure near themsuch as roads, pavements, sluices, and lighting.
Last month erosion damaged 60 metres of road along a bank of the Vam Co TayRiver in Vinh Hung district’s Tuyen Binh Tay commune and a nearby bridge.
Part of the inter-commune road connecting Tuyen Binh Tay and Vinh Binh communessubsided by five metres.
The Vam Co Tay, one of the largest rivers in the province, has severely erodedits banks in a number of places due to strong flows and high flooding levels,sand mining and agricultural production along it./.
Erosion was recently detected in three sections measuring about 1,700m of the embankment in Tran Van Thoi and U Minh districts in the southernmost province of Ca Mau.
The Ca Mau Department of Rural & Development said the locality is speeding up the construction of 26km of embankment to prevent the erosion of its western and eastern coasts, with a total investment of about 890 billion VND (38.7 million USD) from the central budget and official development assistance (ODA).
