Mass release of aquatic species underway in Kien Giang

A mass release of aquatic species into Dong Ho lagoon took place in the Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang’s Ha Tien city on February 19, aiming to regenerate the local fishery resources.

Kien Giang (VNA) – A mass release of aquaticspecies into Dong Ho lagoon took place in the Mekong Delta province of KienGiang’s Ha Tien city on February 19, aiming to regenerate the local fishery resources.

With support from 16 organisations and individuals, theevent saw 1.5 million breeding shrimps, 55,000 carp fry, and 15,000 breedingcrabs, among other species, set free into the waters.

Fishing and aquatic farming have brought significant economicvalues to fishermen in Ha Tien for years. However, environmental pollution andoverexploitation have depleted the local fishery resources. 

Vice Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee Pham VanXuan said the locality’s annual release of breeding aquatic species intonatural bodies of water has so far received great assistance fromorganisations, businesses and individuals, bringing in practical outcomes in theprotection and development of the resources.

The local authorities took the occasion to urge the publicto join hands in protecting fishery reserves, and say no to fishing on breedingseasons as well as to the use of electricity, explosives, and chemicals infishing.-VNA

🃏 Vietnam pioneers use of AI and remote sensing to monitor seawater quality

According to Dr. Vu Anh Tuan, Deputy Director General of the Vietnam Space Centre and head of the project, this is the first study in Vietnam to simultaneously employ Sentinel-2 satellite data, advanced machine learning algorithms, and the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud computing platform to model and monitor key seawater quality parameters.

ඣ Vietnam ramps up plastic waste recycling, reuse, treatment efforts

In 2019, Quang Ninh became one of the first localities in Vietnam to launch a province-wide campaign against plastic waste, mobilising the participation of the political system, the business sector, and the general public. Other localities—such as Hai Phong, Da Nang, Binh Duong, and Ho Chi Minh City—have also effectively implemented waste-sorting initiatives at source, along with models for plastic-free markets and urban areas.
