Ministry: China’s suspension of fishing in Vietnam’s waters meaningless
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development on May 11 said that China’s suspension of fishing in waters within Vietnam’s sovereignty in the East Sea carries no weight whatsoever.
Hanoi (VNA) - The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development on May 11 said that China’s suspension of fishing in waters within Vietnam’ssovereignty in the East Sea carries no weight whatsoever.
In a document sent to the People’s Committees of coastal cities and provinces, the ministry said the ChineseBureau of Fisheries is implementing the suspension of fishing from 12am on May 1 to 12am on August 16in various waters, some of which are within Vietnam’s sovereignty in the EastSea. The cities andprovinces were required to encourage fishermen to continue fishing in Vietnam’swaters and to ask them to go fishing in groups to support each other. Vessels licensed to gofishing in the Gulf of Tonkin’s joint fishing area during 2019-2020 are not allowedto move to the east of the Gulf of Tonkin delimitation line. Authorities of the citiesand provinces must direct competent agencies to enhance management and inspections over the exploitationof fisheries products in waters, especially the departure times of fishing vessels. Russian researchers studying the East Sea issues have opposed Chinese coast guard ship’s hitting and sinking of Vietnamese fishing vessel QNg 90617 TS in the waters of Vietnam’s Hoang Sa (Paracel) archipelago, saying that that the international community will support Vietnam.
China’s maritime claims and recent actions in the East Sea ran counter to the provisions of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea 1982 (UNCLOS 1982), according to an expert on the East Sea issue.
The Vietnam Fisheries Society (VINAFIS) released a document on May 4 opposing China’s issuance of regulations banning fishing in the East Sea this year.

The Chairman stressed the need for stricter fiscal discipline, faster digital transformation, and more efficient management of State budget revenues and expenditures.
