A group of students from Loyola Chicago University of the United States will come to Ho Chi Minh City as part of the new study abroad programme in Vietnam beginning in the fall.

During the semester, lasting from Sept. to Dec. this year, students will take 12 to 15 credit hours, studying topics revolving around the country’s history, society, culture, economics and politics.

This is the second time Loyola Chicago University will send students to Vietnam within a study-abroad programme signed last year between Loyola Chicago University and Ho Chi Minh City National University .

This year, students are required to take at least three credit hours of Vietnamese language, as well as a class entitled "The Culture and Politics of Development in Contemporary Vietnam," according to the university's website www.loyolaphoenix.com .

The website said that living in a guesthouse situated in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City , Loyola students will be able to take their classroom knowledge to the streets of Vietnam and fully immerse themselves in the country’s diverse culture. Additionally, Loyola students have the option of living with a Vietnamese student who is studying at the University of Social Science and Humanities, Loyola’s partner institution in Vietnam .

Rylan Higgins, Ph.D., the Vietnam programme director, said Vietnam is showing increased global integration, improved freedoms in daily life and rapid economic growth. He also said that the country faces struggles with growing inequality and environmental degradation; however, he is confident the students studying abroad in the country will have a rich experience.

According to Amye Day, a study abroad advisor and the Office for International Programmes’ contact for the Vietnam programme, this class "is low-cost but big adventure". "It’s one of the least expensive ways to study abroad but one of the most rewarding experiences you’ll ever have," said Day.

Loyola Chicago University has promoted educational programmes with Vietnamese partners since its opening a representative office in Ho Chi Minh City a year ago. Loyola became the first American university to establish an office in Vietnam as part of a partnership with the Vietnamese Ministry of Education and Training.

Loyola Associate Provost Patrick Boyle the Vietnam office is Loyola's third international outpost, adding the university has centres in Rome and Beijing , in addition to study-abroad programmes in 70 other locations./.
