Myanmar lifts curfew in Mandalay

A month-long curfew was lifted on August 11 in Mandalay, the second largest city in the north of Myanmar, according to local officials.

Seven townships of the riotous city were placed under the 8-hourcurfew (from 9pm to 5am) from July 3. Since then, some 1,400 people gotheavy fine for violating the curfew order.
The order wasimposed following a riot over an alleged rape case on July 1 in ChanayeTharzan, which killed two and injured 17 others. The Myanmar authoritieshave so far arrested 56 suspects for their involvement in the unrestand punished many on the charges of murder, arson, causing damage,incitement and illegal possession of weapons. Ethnic andreligious conflicts are among the most serious social problems inMyanmar. Clashes between Buddhists and Muslims in Rakhine, one of thehot spots in the country, since 2012 have took the lives of more than250 people.-VNA
