Myanmar opens door to international observers during election

Hanoi (VNA)
– A total of 10,500 domestic and international observers will monitor the upcoming general election in Myanmar on November 8, the country’s Unio⭕n Election Commission (UEC) said on November 3.

Those include 1,118 representatives from international agencies.
Around 290 reporters from 45 news agencies worldwide will cover the election. Two information centres will be set up at Myanmar Peace Centre in Yangon city and UEC office in Nay Pyi Taw to disseminate poll results. Under the last update from the UEC, 6,040 candidates representing 91 registered political parties and independent candidates are running for over 1,000 seats in parliament and elected bodies at different levels.
Among 1,163 constituencies, 330 constituencies are set to elect members of the House of Representatives, 168 constituencies to elect members of the House of Nationalities, 636 constituencies to elect regional or state parliaments and 29 constituencies to elect regional or state parliaments for ethnic races. Eligible voters are calculated at 32 million. President U Thein Sein has urged citizens to cooperate with the Government in organising the poll, saying its success will elevate the country’s global position.-VNA
