Hanoi (VNA) – Myanmar’s opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi and Parliament Speaker U Shwe Mann have agreed in a joint statement to place emphasis on national reconciliation and national harmony in forming a new parliament.
The statement followed the closed-door talks between the two figures in the capital of Nay Pyi Taw on November 19.
The talks was the first ever dialogue requested by Suu Kyi after her National League of Democracy (NLD) won a landslide victory in the November 8 general election.
In the joint statement, both sides agreed to coordinate and cooperate in implementingꦺ parliament-related matters and other important tasks to gain mutual trust.
The two sides concurred to coordinate and cooperate in forming the new parliament by law.
The statement stressed that both sides agreed to calmly and systematically implement the people’s aspirations reflected through the general election to raise the country's prestige and bring peace to their people.
In the November 8 general election, the NLD dominated the absolute majority of the Myanmar two-level parliament with 389 seats, which enabled it to form an independent government as prescribed by the constitution.
However, the NLD is yet to disclose the figure selected for the presidency.-VNA
