NA Chairman attends Can Tho’s national reunification celebration

Under the leadership of the Party, Can Tho’s military and people launched simultaneous offensives and uprisings, successfully seizing power on April 30, 1975. This made a significant contribution to the Great Spring Victory of 1975, leading to the complete liberation of the South and the reunification of the country.

Can Tho (VNA) – National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man attended and addressed a ceremony held by authorities of the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho on April 26 to mark the 50th anniversary of the liberation of the South and national reunification (April 30, 1975 – 2025).

In his remarks, the top legislator recalled that five decades ago, under the leadership of the Party, Can Tho’s military and people launched simultaneous offensives and uprisings, successfully seizing power on April 30, 1975. This made a significant contribution to the Great Spring Victory of 1975, leading to the complete liberation of the South and the reunification of the country.

He noted that in recent years, the city has achieved notable progress, becoming an increasingly attractive destination for both domestic and international tourists and investors. However, while acknowledging these achievements, the leader underscored that its development has yet to match its potential and advantages, or the expectations of a centrally run city.

He called on Can Tho to promptly and effectively implement the Party and Government’s policies, as well as the NA’s laws and resolutions on administrative reorganisation, while pursuing strong economic growth targets. He also stressed the importance of thorough preparation for the upcoming Party congresses at all levels for the 2025–2030 term, and for the elections of the 16th NA and the people's councils for the 2026–2031 tenure.

Man urged the city to fully harness and maximise local and regional advantages, with particular focus on developing a green economy, digital economy, circular economy, knowledge-based economy, shared economy, and private sector.

He further underlined the need to balance economic development with cultural and social progress, healthcare improvements, tourism expansion, international cooperation, and investment in education and training to create a highly skilled workforce.

Also at the event, Permanent Deputy Secretary of the municipal Party Committee and Chairman of its People's Council Pham Van Hieu highlighted the city’s strategic significance during the resistance war against the US. Located at the heart of the delta, it was home to the headquarters of the US’s fourth tactical zone, making it a key operational base for military campaigns against the region.

Hieu affirmed that the local authorities and people are determined to uphold and build upon the revolutionary achievements, striving to develop Can Tho into a modern, civilised city.
