National Assembly Vice Chairman visits Madagascar

Hanoi (VNA) - A high-leveldelegation of the Vietnamese National Assembly (NA), led by its Vice ChairmanPhung Quoc Hien, on March 23 began a three-day working visit to Madagascar.

The same day, NA Vice Chairman PhungQuoc Hien met with Speaker of the Parliament of Madagascar Jean MaxRakotomamonjy in the capital city of Antananarivo.

Rakotomamonjy affirmed the fruitfulrelations between Vietnam and Madagascar, and expressed his hope that the multifacetedcooperation between the two countries would be enhanced, including the exchangeof delegations.

He also mentioned several measures tostrengthen relations between the two parliaments, including the establishmentof friendship parliamentary groups.

Regarding economic aspect, theMalagasy Parliament leader hailed Vietnam’s achievements, adding that Vietnamand Madagascar have many similarities in natural conditions, therefore the twosides can increase their cooperation in aquaculture, fishing and cultivation.

He hoped that the visit will helpboost economic and trade ties between the two countries.

For his part, Hien affirmed that, inaddition to the fine political and diplomatic ties, the two countries should furthertheir economic and trade relations to fully tap cooperation opportunities,particularly in agricultural production.

Underlining Vietnam’s leadingposition in rice production and export, Hien said food imports make up of 10percent of Madagascar’ import revenue, while Vietnam can buy cashew nuts – a keyproduct of Madagascar, for processing and exporting to other nations.

The Vietnamese legislator alsohighlighted cooperation potential in light industry and processing industry,and proposed a number of measures to boost investment, such as the signing of aDouble Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA) and an Investment Promotion andProtection Agreement (IPPA).

Hien took this occasion to convey NAChairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan’s invitation to Speaker Jean Max Rakotomamonjyto pay an official visit to Vietnam.-VNA
