New programme aims to raise awareness on domestic violence prevention, control

Hanoi (VNA) - Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam on January 13 signeda decision approving a programme on domestic violence prevention and control to 2025.

The programme aims to have 40 percent of households participate in talks on this issue organised by the commune People's Committeesin villages and residential areas and over 70 percent of people at risk ofdomestic violence be equipped with knowledge and skills on coping with thismatter.

At least 50 percent of main television channels of central and local governments should have a regular programme on domestic violence prevention and control, while 95 percent of detected victims should be able to receive legal support and healthcare, according to the programme.
In addition, more than 80 percent of people who commit acts of domestic violence should be given consultations and knowledge and skills to control themselves.

Centrally-run cities and provinces are requested to have 95percent of their communes, wards and towns maintain the operation of familyviolence prevention and control models, and 90 percent of staff in thework should receive training.

To achieve those targets, the programme sets out the tasks of perfecting laws andpolicies on domestic violence prevention and control, intensifying coordinationbetween ministries, sectors and localities in implementing the programme’s targetsand criteria. A  system providing support services will be set up, internationalcooperation and scientific research in the field be enhanced, and inspections over the enforcementof laws on this issues be intensified.

In addition, the programme sets forth directions for communication activities, requiring them to be based on the culture and social practice of eacharea, with attention paid to ethnic-inhabited areas./.
