Hanoi (VNA) – Tran Tuan Minh is now the onlyVietnamese player in the leading group of the HDBank Cup International OpenChess tournament, which is underway in Hanoi.
On March 11, Tran Tuan Minh defeated Vo ThanhNinh, another Vietnamese, to win all his first three matches and rank secondafter Argentina’s Alan Pichot.
The leading group currently comprises sixplayers with three points each.
The three Vietnamese players who were in theleading group after the second match, Nguyen Anh Khoi, Tran Minh Thang and LuChan Hung, did not win their third matches. Khoi and Thang lost while Hung drew.
Le Quang Liem of Vietnam also scored a victoryin the third match and retained his position in the second group, whichconsists of the players with 2.5 points.
The fourth and fifth matches of the tournamentwill take place on March 12.
After seven editions in Ho Chi Minh City, thisis the first time the HDBank Cup International Open Chess tournament has beenheld in Hanoi. It is the biggest professional chess tourney inVietnam and Southeast Asia and a competition in the World ChessFederation’s system.
The event, scheduled to last through March 15,attracted about 270 players from 21 countries and territories. It offers atotal of 55,000 USD in prizes, an increase of about 20 percent compared to lastyear.-VNA
