Opportunities open for Vietnamese players at K League

Vietnamese players are being offered a better chance to compete in the K League as the Korean professional football league announced on April 18 that it will increase its quota for players from Southeast Asia starting next year.

Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnamese players are being offereda better chance to compete in the K League as the Korean professional football leagueannounced on April 18 that it will increase its quota for players fromSoutheast Asia starting next year.

At the K League board of directorsmeeting, the K League decided to increase the overseas player quota by one tofive from 2020.

The current quota for each club isone Asian player and three players from other parts of the world. Theadditional spot will be earmarked for players from member countries of theASEAN Football Federation (AFF) who are members of the Asian FootballConfederation (AFC), including Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia,Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.

The K-League organisers said theaddition aims to tap new international markets.

In February, Incheon United FCsigned Vietnamese player Nguyen Cong Phuong on loan from his club Hoang Anh GiaLai FC. Following Phuong’s arrival, the Korea Football Association said it willoffer online streaming services for Incheon United FC matches within thecurrent K League 1 season to meet the high demand fromVietnamese fans.–VNA
