A survey conducted by psychologists in Ho Chi Minh City has indicated that over 40 percent of the city’s youngsters questioned show signs of alcohol addiction. Among them, 4.6 percent were found to suffer from serious addiction. They cannot stop using alcohol and become irascible when no alcohol is available.
Up to 60 percent of 670 respondents said that they have drunk alcohol for at least 4 years, while 25.5 percent said they drink alcohol at least three times a week. According to Dr Huynh Thanh Hien of the Ho Chi Minh City Psychiatric Hospital, people are considered as alcohol addicts if they drink at least three times a week with the volume of 50ml of pure alcohol.
Alcohol addiction can lead to anxiety disorder, sexual dysfunction, depression, and antisocial personality, he stated. Statistics of the municipal Traffic Safety Department also showed that so far this year, 45 alcohol-related traffic accidents occured in the city, killing 42 people and injuring 10 others. Young people who see any alcohol addiction signs are encouraged to go to health clinics for consultation and treatment.-VNA
