Painting by Le Pho sold for 1.1 million USD at Hong Kong auction

Hanoi (VNA) – The masterpiece Jeune femme attachant son foulard (Young LadyTying Her Scarf) by renowned painter Le Pho was sold for 1.1 million USD at aHong Kong auction on May 24.

The ink and gouache on silk artwork fetched the highest bid among four works by Vietnamese painters put upfor auction at the 20th and 21st Century Art Evening Saleof Christie’s Hong Kong.

It features of the lady’s diaphanous face, her headdress, her black Ao Dai, thewhite veil, the abundant vegetation, all set in a mountainous landscape ofTonkin, are expressed here with real originality, Christie’s Hong Kong said onits website.

The auction house described the Young Lady Tying Her Scarf as a driving force throughLe Pho’s life and a gift of an endless source of inspiration.

The painting is clearly an extraordinary work – a milestone in the master’screation which uses at the highest level all the same classical elementsusually found in all of Le Pho’s paintings at that time.

Other artworks, namely Les Teinturieres (Dyers at Work) by Nguyen Phan Chanh,Le Bol Bleu (Blue Bowl) by Le Pho, and La Joconde (Mona Lisa) by Mai Trung Thu,gained 563,000 USD, 354,000 USD and over 724,000 USD, respectively.

Le Pho (1907-2001) was a talented painter with a wide range of million-USD artworks.In May 2019, his “Nude” was sold at 1.4 million USD in Hong Kong./.
