Phan Chau Trinh Awards 2012 presented

Former Vice President Nguyen Thi Binh granted the awards to thewinners at a ceremony in Ho Chi Minh City on March 29.

Accordingly, a culture and education award was given to educator BuiTran Phuong and artist Vu Duc Hieu, a translation award to Chu Tien Anhand Pham Duy Hien, a research award to overseas Vietnamese professor LeThanh Khoi and a Vietnamese studies award to French professor PhilippeLanglet.

Phuong and Hieu were honoured for theircontributions to promoting education and preserving Vietnamese Muongethnic culture.

Artist Hieu was recognised for the MuongEthnic Group Cultural Space Museum , which he established in2007. It is the first private museum in the northern province of HoaBinh and the only museum in Vietnam devoted to Muong culture.

Phuongis the rector of Hoa Sen University in Ho Chi Minh City whichwas developed from a vocational school and gathers educators fromdiverse backgrounds.

She is a core faculty member for SIT(School for International Training) Study Abroad in Vietnam . She haslectured on gender and social change for SIT students and has ledinteractive discussions between SIT and local students at Hoa SenUniversity .

Anh and Hien were awarded for theirtranslation works which have brought human knowledge quintessence toVietnamese readers.

Khoi was recognised for his researchon cultures from the East to the West and Langlet for spending his wholelife studying and introducing Vietnamese history and culture.


Theawards were instituted in 2007 by the Phan Chau Trinh CultureFoundation which is run by the Vietnam Union of Science and TechnologyAssociations

From 2007 to 2011, the foundation hashonored numerous domestic and foreign translators, scientists andculturists namely Bui Van Nam Son, Le Hong Sam, Nguyen Dinh Dau, NguyenSu, Ho Ngoc Dai, Nguyen Van Khoa, G. Condominas and David Marr

Bornin 1872, Trinh, a national hero, poet and cultural expert, was areformer who fought in the resistance movement against the French whenhe was very young. He devoted all of his life to the country'smodernisation.-VNA

🃏 Vietnam re-elected to 2005 UNESCO Convention’s Intergovernmental Committee

This is the first time since the adoption of the Convention that a country has served two consecutive terms on the Committee. The outcome shows the trust and recognition that member states have given Vietnam for its efforts and achievements in carrying out and promoting the Convention, as well as for its active role, strong standing, and growing credibility at UNESCO.
