Hanoi (VNA) – The Philippines warnedpeople to keep away from Mayon volcano at least 6km in case the country’s mostactive volcano erupts suddenly.
In its announcement at 8am on May 25, the Philippine Institute of Volcanologyand Seismology said that Mayon volcano’s seismic monitoring network recordedtwo volcanic earthquakes during the past 24 hours.
Moderate emission of white steam-laden plumesthat rose 300 metres from the summit before drifting southwest, west-southwestand west-northwest was observed throughout the day.
Alert Level 2, out of five levels, currentlyprevails over Mayon Volcano, which means that Mayon is at a moderate level ofunrest. However, the institute reminds the public of sudden explosions, lavacollapses, pyroclastic density currents and ashfall can still occur andthreaten areas in the upper to middle slopes of Mayon.
The 2,464m-high mountain, located on Luzonisland in Albay province, is the most active volcano in the Philippines. Overthe past 400 years, the volcano has erupted 51 times. The eruption in 1814killed over 1,200 people and occluded three towns.-VNA
