Phu Yen (VNA) – Community-based tourism activities have helpedprotect coral reefs in Hon Yen island in the central province of Phu Yen, hearda workshop on January 10.

The event, jointly held by the provincialWomen’s Union, Tuy An district’s People’s Committee, and the United NationsDevelopment Programme (UNDP), aimed to assess the implementation of a projecton researching and building a new user fee for coral ecosystem protection inHon Yen island.

Chairwoman of the provincial Women’s UnionLe Dao An Xuan said that the project has created a sustainable source oflivelihood for local people through community-based tourism activities, thuscontributing financial resources to support the protection of Hon Yen coralreef and reduce ocean plastic waste.

According to Assoc. Prof., Dr. Trinh VanTung from the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics’ Institute forLeadership and Public Policy, the project has created tours toattract tourists and contribute new and sustainable financial resources tocoral reef protection activities.

Hon Yen island boasts rich coral reefs with 17species distributed over an area of about 12.71 hectares./.

Other localities—such as Hai Phong, Da Nang, Binh Duong, and Ho Chi Minh City—have also effectively implemented waste-sorting initiatives at source, along with models for plastic-free markets and urban areas.
