HCMCity (VNA) – Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and leaders of someministries and agencies went to inspect the construction of Metro Line No. 1 inHo Chi Minh City on April 12.
LinkingBen Thanh Market in District 1 up with Suoi Tien Tourism Park in District 9,Metro Line No.1 is the first of eight metro lines planned in the southernmetropolis, with a total length of about 220 km and accumulated funding ofnearly 25 billion USD.
Theproject, whose construction began in April 2012, includes four bidding packagesusing official development assistance (ODA) loans from the Japan InternationalCooperation Agency (JICA).
Bynow, up to 63.49 percent of the workload has been fulfilled. The constructionis expected to be completed in 2020 and the metro line, also the first of itskind in Vietnam, is set to be open to the public the following year.
PMPhuc lauded the efforts made by ministries and agencies, authorities of HCMCity, and officials and workers at the construction site during theimplementation of the project.
Hedescribed the project as a vivid manifestation of the strategic partnershipbetween Vietnam and Japan, which marked the 45th anniversary of their bilateraldiplomatic ties last year.
ThePM used the occasion to thank the Japanese government, embassy, and consulate general,as well as the JICA for their support in implementing the important project.
Hesaid the Vietnamese Government has worked with competent agencies to allow HCMCity to take charge of adjusting total estimate of the project, thus ensuringresources for the construction.
PMPhuc expressed his hope that the project will go smoothly, meeting requirementsof safety, quality, and progress. –VNA
Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee Nguyen Thanh Phong has asked the Prime Minister for permission to borrow 2.15 trillion (92.9 million USD) from the central government to pay contractors who are building Metro Line No 1.
Ho Chi Minh City’s Metro No.1 project will receive strong support from local authorities so that it can soon be put into operation, Secretary of the municipal Party Committee Nguyen Thien Nhan on March 13 stressed.
The HCM City People’s Committee has approved an advance of 2.1 trillion VND (93 million USD ) from the city budget for metro line No 1 project between Ben Thanh Market and Suoi Tien Tourist Park.

During the negotiations, the US highly evaluated Vietnam’s goodwill and efforts, affirmed its appreciation for the bilateral relationship, acknowledged Vietnam’s proposals and concerns, and considered these an important basis for continuing discussions and moving towards a final agreement.
