PM urges stepping up sustainable development in Mekong Delta
Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has instructed competent agencies to promptly create regional coordination institutions and a sustainable development mechanism in the Mekong Delta.
Hanoi (VNA) – Prime MinisterNguyen Xuan Phuc has instructed competent agencies to promptly create regionalcoordination institutions and a sustainable development mechanism in the MekongDelta.
The request has been included in Directive No. 23/CT-TTg recently signed by theGovernment leader, aiming to push ahead with the implementation of theGovernment’s Resolution No. 120/NQ-CP on developing the Mekong Delta sustainably,adaptive to climate change.
Under the Directive, the PM said regional connectivity should be taken intoaccount during the process of making mechanisms and policies on economicdevelopment, infrastructure investment, production connectivity and productconsumption.
He also required seeking more resources and legal sources of capital for theregion, highlighting the significance of a suitable financial mechanism to thesustainable development in the region.
The leader called for greater efforts in personnel training, human resourcedevelopment, and scientific research and technological development in serviceof the regional sustainable development.
PM Phuc pointed out that the implementation of Resolution No. 120/NQ-CP hasbeen hampered by the lack of attention of agencies and localities to both researchwork and resource mobilization for solutions to ease adverse impacts of climatechange and meet demands of sustainable socio-economic development. The lack ofeffective regulations on regional coordination and regional and inter-regionalconnectivity is also another factor behind the limited outcomes of theresolution.
The Mekong Delta comprises of 12provinces: Long An, Dong Thap, TienGiang, An Giang, Ben Tre, Vinh Long, Tra Vinh, Hau Giang, Kien Giang, Soc Trang, Bac Lieu, and Ca Mau, along with the centrally run city of Can Tho.
The region is under serious threats from extremeand unpredictable sides of climate change such as erosion, saltwater intrusionand water shortage that are getting severe, affecting regional development.-VNA
The Mekong Delta province of Ben Tre will evacuate about 200 local households living along rivers and canals to safer areas in 2019-2020 , and support 100 others to repair and upgrade their houses in the period.

It is also a moment for Vietnam’s media to accelerate its progress and figure out what the “revolutionary press” means in a new era.
