Prime Minister visits AUT, talks to Vietnamese expats in New Zealand

Auckland (VNA) – Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc andhis spouse met with representatives of Vietnamese people in New Zealand whenvisiting the Auckland University of Technology (AUT) on March 12.
The activity was part of PM Phuc’s officialvisit to New Zealand from March 11 to 14.
The Vietnamese Government leader was welcomed atthe AUT with the traditional Hongi greeting of local Maori people.
After touring the AUT facilities, the PM talked to Vietnamesestudents in the university and representatives of the Vietnamese community.
At the meeting, Vietnamese Ambassador NguyenViet Dung said most of Vietnamese people in the country have led a stable lifeand contributed to local development. Many Vietnamese are also among thestudents with the best academic results at the AUT.
PM Phuc highly valued the Vietnamese Embassy’sefforts to promote the two countries’ cooperation and support Vietnamese peoplein New Zealand. He expressed his hope that the embassy’s staff and Vietnamesepeople in the country will make unceasing efforts in their work so as toimprove themselves, support their families, and contribute to the homeland.
He noted that there are nearly 6,000 Vietnamesestudents in New Zealand at present. The two countries have cooperated in manyfields, especially hi-tech agriculture, but those activities are just in theinitial stage and there remains huge potential for more cooperation.
Aside from external relations, promoting tradepartnership is also an important task that the embassy and Vietnamese people inNew Zealand should pay attention to, he said, asking for the reinforcement ofbilateral ties in the spheres that New Zealand is strong at such as greenagriculture and infrastructure building.
PM Phuc asked the embassy to bolster connectionsin education and training, expand tourism cooperation and further assist theVietnamese community.
The AUT has engaged in a number of jointtraining activities with Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang city of Vietnam.It plans to step up educational cooperation with the Southeast Asian nationwith a hope that Vietnamese students in the AUT will be an important bridgehelping to nurture the friendship and cooperation between the twocountries.-VNA

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc’s visit to New Zealand from March 12-14 is a reiteration of Vietnam’s policy of attaching importance to its diplomatic ties with the country, looking towards a strategic partnership and enhanced cooperation in major spheres.

During the negotiations, the US highly evaluated Vietnam’s goodwill and efforts, affirmed its appreciation for the bilateral relationship, acknowledged Vietnam’s proposals and concerns, and considered these an important basis for continuing discussions and moving towards a final agreement.
The Chairman stressed the need for stricter fiscal discipline, faster digital transformation, and more efficient management of State budget revenues and expenditures.
