The project has been given231 billion VND (11 million USD) in low-interest loans and 126 billionVND (6 million USD) in non-refundable aid by the International Fund forAgricultural Development (IFAD).
From 2014 to2020, it will be implemented in 30 communes of seven districts of TraVinh to build climate change adaptation facilities, 16 automaticsalinity monitoring stations, agricultural and aquatic production modelswith high economic viability, and small-scale financial organisationsto provide capital for the poor.
The project is expected to benefit 62,500 low-income people.
Tra Vinh is among the localities most vulnerable to rising sea levelsand salt intrusion in Vietnam. If the sea level rises by one metre,about 45.7 percent of Tra Vinh’s land area will be flooded.
In the last five years, seawater has surged 500 – 800 metres inlandand eroded more than 120 hectares of land in Hiep Thanh commune, DuyenHai district.
The United Nations’ IFAD hasfinanced Vietnam since 1991 with low-interest 40-50 year loans that havebeen channelled to farmers, fishermen, disadvantaged women and ethniccommunities.-VNA
Mariam Sherman, World Bank Country Director for Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia, said the World Bank remains committed to working with the Vietnamese government to develop the next phase of climate resilience and transformation for the Mekong Delta.
Under the directive, the PM instructed relevant agencies to regularly inspect, supervise and proactively implement disaster prevention, response and rescue measures in line with their assigned roles and mandates, ensuring readiness, avoiding passivity or delays, and maintaining operational continuity amid ongoing political and administrative restructuring at levels.
According to Dr. Vu Anh Tuan, Deputy Director General of the Vietnam Space Centre and head of the project, this is the first study in Vietnam to simultaneously employ Sentinel-2 satellite data, advanced machine learning algorithms, and the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud computing platform to model and monitor key seawater quality parameters.
The Deposit Return System is seen as a potential instrument for effectively advancing Vietnam’s vision of a circular economy, as outlined in Article 142 of the 2020 Law on Environmental Protection.
