Quang Nam festival focuses on heritage values

Hoi An ancient town and My Son relic site, both the world’s heritage sites, will be open free-of-charge to visitors during the fifth Quang Nam Heritage Festival 2013, which is slated for June 21-26.

The move aims to lure more people to the Quang Nam festival, whosemain activities will take place in the two sites in celebration of the10 th anniversary of the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding ofIntangible Cultural Heritage, announced a press briefing in Hanoi on May7.

Hoi An was recognised as a World Heritage Site byUNESCO in 1999. Its building and its street plan reflects theinfluences, both indigenous and foreign, that have combined to producethis unique heritage site.

My Son was chosen as the site for areligious centre for the capital of the Champa Kingdom . Thesanctuary area is one of the most famous Champa architectural andsculptural monuments in Vietnam . It was recognised as a WorldHeritage Site by UNESCO in 1999.

Accordingto Vice Chairman of the Quang Nam provincial People’s Committee TranMinh Ca, the two world’s cultural heritage sites receive millions ofvisitors a year.

The festival is a chance to promotethe image of Vietnam in general and central Quang Nam province inparticular in order to boost tourism and lure more investment in thelocality.

To date, tens of domestic and internationaldelegations have registered to attend the event, including those fromASEAN countries, Japan and the Republic of Korea .

An opening ceremony of the festival on June 26 will be broadcast live.

Within the framework of the event, there will be an exhibition themed “Vietnam-ASEAN Cultural Heritage Space ” to feature many artisticperformances to be staged by 200 local and foreign artists.

Other activities include the 3 rd International Choir Festival fromJune 19-26, a street show, the 3 rd Miss Ethnic Vietnam 2013 pageantfrom June 12-26 and the Art Festival for Vietnamese Ethnic MinorityGroups.

On this occasion, Quang Nam haslaunched a host of tours to the Ho Chi Minh Trail, traditional brocadeweaving villages and hamlets of Co Tu ethnic groups.-VNA
