Quang Nam to have another Sao La reserve

The central province of Quang Nam has decided to establish a conservation zone for Sao La (Pseudoryx nghetinhensis) , a wildlife species at risk of extinction living along the border between Vietnam and Laos.

This is the second Sao La conservationzone in Vietnam, after the first one located at the Bach Ma NationalPark in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue.

TranMinh Hien, Director of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) in Vietnamsaid that this move represents the strong determination of theVietnamese government and Quang Nam province in protecting this rareanimal.

In Vietnam, Sao La was first discovered inthe central province of Ha Tinh in 1992 and is now listed in the VietnamRed Book of endangered species due to quick decrease in theirpopulation.

According to scientists, the number of Sao La in Vietnam and Laos ranges from tens to 100.

Since 2007, WWF has cooperated with scientists, Quang Nam officialsand the local community in researching the Sao La population, threatsfor the species and planning priority zones for conservation./.
