Regional seminar on country contributions to new climate change deal

A regional seminar held in Hanoi on July 20 discussed preparations for intended nationally determined contributions (INDCs) to the new climate change agreement to be concluded at the 21 st Conference of the Parties (COP 21) at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in 2015.

During COP 20 in Lima, Peru lastyear, participants were urged to build and submit their own INDCs thisyear, ahead of COP 21 in Paris, said Deputy Minister of NaturalResources and Environment Tran Hong Ha.

So far, 19 sets of INDCs have been submitted to the UNFCCC Secretariat.

Vietnam’s draft INDCs document covers expected contributions togreenhouse gas emission reduction and climate change adaptation to beimplemented in the country from 2021-2030. The plans have receivedfeedback from research institutes, non-governmental and internationalorganisations, and development partners.

Representatives from Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Vanuatu raised theirvoices to devise their own INDCs and discuss the possibility ofcooperation in response to climate change within the Francophonecommunity in the Asia-Pacific.

Vietnam pioneers use of AI and remote sensing to monitor seawaterꦆ quality

According to Dr. Vu Anh Tuan, Deputy Director General of the Vietnam Space Centre and head of the project, this is the first study in Vietnam to simultaneously employ Sentinel-2 satellite data, advanced machine learning algorithms, and the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud computing platform to model and monitor key seawater quality parameters.

Vietnam ramps up plastic waste recycling, reuse, treatment ef🐼forts

In 2019, Quang Ninh became one of the first localities in Vietnam to launch a province-wide campaign against plastic waste, mobilising the participation of the political system, the business sector, and the general public. Other localities—such as Hai Phong, Da Nang, Binh Duong, and Ho Chi Minh City—have also effectively implemented waste-sorting initiatives at source, along with models for plastic-free markets and urban areas.
