RENEW project handles 590 explosive devices in Quang Tri

A team of the “Restoring the Environment and Neutralising the Effects of the War” (RENEW) project said it safely moved 590 explosive devices from a construction site in the central province of Quang Tri.

Quang Tri (VNA) – A team of the “Restoring the Environment and Neutralisingthe Effects of the War” (RENEW) project said it safely moved 590 explosivedevices from a construction site in the central province of Quang Tri.

The mission tookplace from October 10-11, right after the team received a report on explosivedevices from workers, who were building a guest house of Quang Tri town’smilitary high command at a location near the southern bank of Thach Han river.  

At the site, theteam found many devices, including shells and mortar shells, at a depth of 2metres, with their detonators remained intact.    

The devices weremoved to a safe site for defusing in Trieu Trach commune, Trieu Phong district.

RENEW, mainlysponsored by the Norwegian People’s Aid (NPA), aims to help Quang Tri, known asone of the provinces hardest hit by the war, settle post-war bomb and landmineimpacts.

To date, morethan 131 million square metres of land in Quang Tri province have been mappedout as confirmed hazardous areas that need full clearance. The NPA’s teams havedestroyed about 70,000 pieces of dangerous ordnance, helping to eliminate therisks of death and injury for local residents.-VNA

📖 PM orders strengthened disaster preparedness ahead of storm season

According to Dr. Vu Anh Tuan, Deputy Director General of the Vietnam Space Centre and head of the project, this is the first study in Vietnam to simultaneously employ Sentinel-2 satellite data, advanced machine learning algorithms, and the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud computing platform to model and monitor key seawater quality parameters.

In 2019, Quang Ninh became one of the first localities in Vietnam to launch a province-wide campaign against plastic waste, mobilising the participation of the political system, the business sector, and the general public. Other localities—such as Hai Phong, Da Nang, Binh Duong, and Ho Chi Minh City—have also effectively implemented waste-sorting initiatives at source, along with models for plastic-free markets and urban areas.
