Kien Giang (VNA) – A central-level campaign to clean up the sea for this year was jointly launchedon July 28 at a ceremony on Phu Quoc island, the southern province of Kien Giang,by the Central Committee of the Vietnam Youth Union, the National VolunteersCentre, the Vietnam Television, the Ministry of Public Security, and the USEmbassy.
Speaking at the launch,Vice Chairperson of the committee Nguyen Kim Quy stressed that the campaign hasbeen taken as one of the key events of the bigger and ongoing 2018 Summervolunteer campaign. By now, the youth unions of 28 littoral provinces andcities have worked out plans to organise activities to effectively protect thesea environment.
Besides efforts by theyoungsters, the organising board also hopes the campaign to create a fall-outeffect so as to inspire a sense of keeping the sea clean in every citizen.Measures to this end include launching awareness campaigns on the importance ofthe sea to the human life, the abstention of discharging rubbish inundesignated places and the reduction of use of plastic bags and other products,among others.
The campaign alsocalls on the community to join hands to protect the sea environment withpractical acts suitable to each locality and to hold social security activitiesso as to encourage poor fishermen to continue their work. It aims to draw atleast 28,000 participants, establish and maintain key volunteers’ groups tokeep the sea clean, ease the pollution caused by rubbishes at at least 50percent of the places rated as polluted, and have at least 50 initiatives inthis work.
Also at the launch,the organising board also presented rubbish bins and two cars for awarenesspurposes to volunteers of Phu Quoc.
The campaign will wrapup at a ceremony to be held in September.-VNA
