SEA Games 31: Philippines triumphs in triathlon competitions

Quang Ninh (VNA) - The men’s and women’s triathlon competitions of SEA Games 31 began in Ha Long city of the north-eastern province of Quang Ninh on May 14, seeing the participation of athletes from seven countries.
Fernando Tan Casares and Andrew Remonino of the Philippines won the gold and silver in the men’s individual category, clocking 1:56:57 and 1:59:16, respectively.
Ronald Bintang Setiawan of Indonesia claimed the bronze medal.
Lam Quang Nhat of host Vietnam, who was the gold medallist in the men’s 1,500m in swimming of SEA Games in 2013 and 2015 and switched to triathlon recently, finished first in the first three rounds but was overtaken in the fourth one.
Similarly in the women’s individual event, the Philippine athletes showed their strength with Marion Mangrobang and Raven Alcoseba coming first and third.
Indonesian athlete Inge Prasetyo bagged silver.
A medal award ceremony was held in the morning of the same day.
SEA Games 31, themed “For a Stronger South East Asia”, is being held in Hanoi and 11 neighbouring provinces and cities until May 23.
It features 40 sports with 523 events, attracting around 10,000 participants. The biennial event was initially slated for late 2021 but delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic./.
Favourable conditions will be created for Philippine athletes so they can focus on their competitions and get the best results at the ongoing SEA Games 31, Commissioner Ramon Fernandez of the Philippine Sports Commission has said.
The Philippines trounced Malaysia 3-0 at the opening match of ongoing SEA Games 31’s indoor handball competition which started in the northern coastal province of Quang Ninh’s Ha Long city on May 13.
Matches of Thailand in the men’s football at the ongoing SEA Games 31 in Nam Dinh province’s Thien Truong Stadium attracted a large number of spectators compared to other fixtures, reported a Thai newspaper.
The ambassador noted that among the 300,000 Vietnamese residing in the RoK, around 3,000 are living in Pyeongtaek and contributing actively to the local economy. Ho expressed his hope that the local authorities will continue support the overseas Vietnamese community in the city.
This is the first time since the adoption of the Convention that a country has served two consecutive terms on the Committee. For the first time, Vietnamese audiences will have the opportunity to experience the ballet masterpiece "Don Quixote" in its original version by renowned choreographer Marius Petipa.

The event formed part of Vietnam’s ongoing campaign to seek UNESCO World Heritage status for the complex at the 47th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, scheduled to take place in Paris in July.

These are impressive achievements, not only showing the efforts and prowess of Vietnamese paddlers but also serving as proof of the sports sector’s strategic and systematic investment.
