Accordingly, Singapore’s largestgroup of healthcare institutions, which include Singapore General Hospital andKK Women’s and Children’s Hospital, has been the target of the cyber attack saidto be the most serious breach of personal data in the island country’s history.
In a joint statement issued at a multi-ministry press conference on the sameday, the Singaporean Ministry of Health and Ministry of Communications andInformation said the Government’s database has been hacked in a purposeful andthoughtfully planned-out cyber attack.
The authorities said PM Lee’s information was "specifically and repeatedlytargeted".
Minister of Health Gan Kim Yong described the leak as the most serious,unprecedented breach of personal data in Singapore.
Hackers targeted mainly the personal details of PM Lee, including informationrelated to his outpatient treatment, he said.
The Singaporean Government has previously warned of cyber attacks,saying it has been the target of international hackers, but many of the attackswere foiled.
It has stepped upmeasures in recent years, including disconnecting computers for certain keyministries in the civil service from the Internet, so that they operate onintranet services only.
