Hanoi (VNA) – Singapore has refused to replace the Philippines as host ofthe 2019 Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games 30).

Chris Chan, Secretary General of the Singapore National Olympic Council said ina statement on August 4 that other countries should consider replacing thePhilippines to be the host, after the Philippine Government showed its concernover security and terrorism.

Before SEA Games 29 kicks off on August 19, the South East Asian GamesFederation should hold a meeting on the issue, he added.

In July, the Philippine Government announced to pull out of hosting the SEAGames to focus on re-building the southern Marawi city, which has been ravagedby clashes lasting nearly three months between the Government’s forces andgunmen of the self-claimed Islamic State (IS).Thedecision was made following various meetings between sports officials andPresident Rodrigo Duterte and Sports Commission Chairman William Ramirez.

The country last hosted the SEA Games in 2005. It accepted to become thehost of the SEA Games 30 in 2015, after the post was begged off by Vietnam andBrunei.-VNA
