Smuggled rhino horns seized at Noi Bai airport

Vietnamese customs officials at Noi Bai International Airport on June 1 reported that they found rhino horns and wild animals’ fangs in the luggage of a Vietnamese woman who had been on a flight from Bangkok to Hanoi on May 30.

Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnamese customs officials at Noi Bai InternationalAirport on June 1 reported that they found rhino horns and wild animals’ fangsin the luggage of a Vietnamese woman who had been on a flight from Bangkok toHanoi on May 30.

All of the seized exhibits were transferred to the Vietnam Academy of Scienceand Technology’s Institute of Ecology and Biological Resources for assessment.

The smuggler and the exhibits were later handed over to Soc Son districtpolice.

Investigation into the case is underway.

There are only 25,000 wild rhinos in the world, with the population dropping by95 percent over the last four decades.

Conservationistshave warned that rhinos will become extinct within the next 10 years ifpoaching is not stopped. The last Java rhino in Vietnam was killed at Cat TienNational Park in 2010.-VNA

Vietnam pioneers use o൲f AI and remote sensing to monitor seawater quality

According to Dr. Vu Anh Tuan, Deputy Director General of the Vietnam Space Centre and head of the project, this is the first study in Vietnam to simultaneously employ Sentinel-2 satellite data, advanced machine learning algorithms, and the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud computing platform to model and monitor key seawater quality parameters.
