Lao Cai (VNA) – Sa Pa Snow Festival kicked offin Sa Pa district, the northwestern province of Lao Cai, on December 24 with aview to promoting local natural and cultural beauties among visitors.

The festival will feature various activitiessuch as singing and dancing performances, folk games, re-enactment of the RedDao ethnic group’s traditional wedding, and a photo exhibition of snow in SaPa.

Tourists can gain an insight into traditionalcostumes of local ethnic minorities at a display where how to make these dresswill also be shown. They can also enjoy artificial snow and local typical farmproduce and dishes.

The Sa Pa Snow Festival is one of the firstactivities of the National Tourism Year 2017, which is themed “LaoCai-Northwest”. It is expected to be a new tourism product held annually tooffer tourists a chance to experience Sa Pa’s winter.

As a northern border province, Lao Cai boastssufficient advantages to develop tourism, including diverse topography fromMount Fansipan – the highest peak in Vietnam, terraced rice fields, and asystem of rivers, springs and waterfalls.

Notably, Sa Pa has a cool climate all year roundand is also home to ethnic villages with special cultural identities.

Lao Cai has made great strides in tourismdevelopment. It welcomed more than 2.7 million tourists in 2016, a year-on-yearrise of 32.5 percent, including over 750,700 foreigners. It’s tourism revenue isestimated at 6.4 trillion VND (281 million USD) this year, up 37 percent from2015.

That success was greatly contributed by Sa Pa,which received 970,000 tourists and earned 1.69 trillion VND (74.2 million USD)in tourism revenue in 2016.-VNA
