Soc Trang: Khmer people celebrate Sene Dolta festival

The Khmer community in Soc Trang province, along with Khmer people in the southern region, are celebrating their traditional Sene Dolta festival from September 16 to 18.

SocTrang (VNA) – The Khmer community in Soc Trang province, alongwith Khmer people in the southern region, are celebrating their traditionalSene Dolta festival from September 16 to 18.

Sene Dolta, which is celebrated from the 30thof the eighth lunar month to the second of the ninth lunar month each yea, isone of the most important religious festivals for Khmer ethnic people, alongwith Chol Chnam Thmay (New Year) and Ooc Oom Bok to thank the Moon for a goodharvest.

During the event, people gather to pay homageto their ancestors and enjoy traditional singing and dancing after a year ofhard work.

Leaders of Soc Trang province have paidvisits to local Khmer pagodas to offer greetings on the occasion, and presentedgifts to those in need.

On September 15, Secretary of the provincialParty Committee Phan Van Sau visited Most Venerable Duong Nhon – Deputy SupremePatriarch of the Patronage Council of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBS), headof the provincial Association for Solidarity of Patriotic Buddhist Monks andhead of Prek On Dot Pagoda in My Xuyen district.

The official praised the contributions madeby the Most Venerable, other monks and Buddhist followers to local development.He urged the Buddhist dignitaries to continue to encourage followers toactively join in patriotic emulation campaigns and build a rich and prosperousSoc Trang province.

Local Khmer people also pay attention toepidemic prevention work, avoiding gathering in large numbers in ceremonies at localpagodas.

Soc Trang province is home to over 397,000Khmer people who account for 30 percent of the province’s population. They livemainly in Chau Thanh, Long Phu, My Xuyen,Cu Lao Dung and My Tu districts./.
