Southern provinces urged to proactively address climate change

One of the major challenges facing southernmost Ca Mau, Kien Giangand other Mekong Delta localities is saltwater intrusion diluting andlimiting the supply of fresh water for daily use and production, Haisaid.

A report released by the provincialDepartment of Natural Resources and Environment revealed that close to10,000 hectares of agricultural land in Ca Mau have been contaminatedwith sea water.

Hai requested the Ministry ofAgriculture and Rural Development and related ministries study theimpact of disasters and climate change in order to design effectiveresponse plans.

Priority should be given toprotecting mangrove forests, speeding up reforestation and upgradingirrigation and sea dyke systems, he suggested.

Climate change poses a complicated concern and affects numerous aspectsof life, necessitating the participation of the entire community and theclose cooperation between institutes and scientists to determineflexible solutions relevant to each locality and region, he stated.-VNA
