Universities must take the lead in environmental protection, said aninternational workshop in the Mekong delta province of An Giangon July 23.
At the workshop on the awareness ofenvironmental protection demand and the role of tertiary education,representatives from universities of Japan , the US , Thailand ,Singapore , the Philippines , New Zealand and Cambodia joinedinstitutes and universities from 14 provinces of Vietnam . Theyemphasised the responsibility of the community in environmentalprotection and expressed concern over poor awareness of environmentalissues in developing nations.
Prof. Dr. KensukeFukushi from Japan ’s Tokyo University said that sustainableenvironmental protection must be based on sustainable science witheducation being the most important activity.
The BenTre university introduced its experiences in building an environmentwebsite using folk songs to educate about environmental protection andhow to cope with climate change.
Prof. A. PremAnanth from Thailand spoke of the model of solid waste management with3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycling) technology which has been effectivelyused by the Philippines and Malaysia in collecting and recycling andby India in classifying solid wastes.
To reduceenvironmental pollution and effectively cope with climate change, theparticipants put forward solutions to promote communication in thecommunity, mobilise the participation of both the political system andthe community and expand various forms of education through variousentertainment activities./.
