Hanoi (VNA) - A Vietnamese and Thai traditional puppet show was performed at ꧙the Hanoi Opera House on June 18 as one of the activities celebrating 40 years of ties between the two countries (August 6, 1976-2016).

In his opening speech, Thai Ambassador to Vietnam Manopchai Vongphakdi emphasised the importance of cultural and arts exchanges to the celebration of the 40th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two nations.
He added that traditional puppet performances were meaningful to the two countries, thus contributing to cultural exchanges and co-operation to preserve the unique art form. Opening the show, Vietnamese artists staged the performance themed ‘Homeland rhythm’ based on traditional rustic folk songs close to the daily life of Vietnamese farmers.
The show focused on rattan made puppets with familiar things in everyday life such as baskets, nets, brooms, and fans. With subtle and dexterous movements, the artists turned them into lively puppets with emotion. Thai artists performed a show called the Lunar Eclipse, a lively tale based on Thailand’s ancient belief that a lunar eclipse was caused by a demon who swallowed the moon. The show was an impressive blend of puppetry and other traditional arts.-VNA
