Thailand earned 113 billion THB (3 billion USD) from shipping abroad 6.9 million tonnes of rice between January 1 and September 22, a five percent decrease on-year. Duangporn Rodphaya, Director General of the Thai Commerce Ministry’s Foreign Trade Department, disclosed that the average price of all types of rice stood at 480 USD per tonne, down by three percent over the corresponding time last year.
Although Thailand has suffered from the severe drought this year, the country should still export up to 10 million tonnes this whole year, thanks to high demand in some markets and the drought in many rice producing countries, she said.
Since Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha took office in May 2014, as many 4.55 million tonnes of rice worth 49.5 billion THB (1.3 billion USD) was sold from the country’s reserves. The Thai Government is planning another auction on September 29.-VNA
