Bangkok (NNT/VNA) - Let’stake a look at the efforts to reduce single-use food container to reduce waste.From July 1 onward, shoppers at Tesco Lotus supermarkets will no longer see anyfood container made of foams. The shopping centers have also introduced plasticbottles and cans recycling machines allowing customers to gain points fromrecycling.

The plastic bottles and cansrecycling machines allow consumers to dispose of unused plastic bottles andcans in exchange for Club Card points. The machines are being rolled out acrossTesco Lotus supermarkets to help reduce waste from single-use food containers,as part of the supermarket’s Rethinking Packaging campaign.

From July 1, 2019 onward, Tesco Lotuswill discontinue the use of food containers made of foams, which will bereplaced with those made of recycled materials, as another effort to reducewaste from single-use food containers.

Tesco Lotus’ Corporate AffairsDirector Salinla Seehaphan said the company will be launching a campaignreducing environmental effects from packaging on this year’s World EnvironmentDay (June 5). The campaign will promote the use of bio-degradable thermoformedcontainers, in addition to no plastic bags campaign, and the recycling of useditems into reusable grocery bags.

The Department of Environment QualityPromotion Rutchada Suriyakul Na Ayutya has thanked government agencies andprivate firms in a network consisting of 43 organizations for their cooperationand their awareness of environmental issues. The department’s Altruistic Heartsenvironmental campaign has so far reduced 1.3 billion plastic bags since Julylast year.-NNT/VNA
