Thailand’s rice exports rise sharply in nine months

Thailand earned 95.23 billion baht (2.54 billion USD) from exporting 5.41 million tonnes of rice in the first nine months of this year, up 40% in volume and 36% in value from the same period last year, according to the Ministry of Commerce.

Bangkok (VNA) - Thailand earned 95.23billion baht (2.54 billion USD) from exporting 5.41 million tonnes of rice inthe first nine months of this year, up 40% in volume and 36% in value from thesame period last year, according to the Ministry of Commerce.

Iraq became the biggest buyer of Thai ricein the reviewed period, importing 15.4 billion baht worth of the product.

Other big export markets for Thai rice inthe first nine months were the US, South Africa, China and Hong Kong (China).

Thailand is now the world’s second-largestrice exporter after India.

The Rice Exporters Association of Thailandforecasts the country will ship 7-8 million tonnes of rice this year as theweakening baht boosts competitiveness over India and Vietnam.

In the framework of the 14th World RiceConference hosted by Phuket on November 15-17, Thailand’s foreign tradeagencies will introduce the country’s rice export potential./.
