Hanoi (VNA)– The third Vietnam-Sri Lanka political consultation took place in Colombo onApril 11, during which the two sides agreed to roll out measures to lift up theVietnam-Sri Lanka partnership.
Deputy ForeignMinister Dang Dinh Quy and his Sri Lankan counterpart Sumith Nakandalaco-chaired the event.
Speaking highly of thesound traditional friendship and all-round partnership between the twocountries, Deputy Minister Quy agreed to propose an early visit by Vietnameseleaders to Sri Lanka.
Sumith Nakandalastated that the consultation is one of the important mechanisms to boost thegrowth of bilateral ties, and agreed to hold the fourth meeting of the bilateralJoint Committee soon in 2018.
Concurring that tradeand investment are a key pillar in bilateral cooperation, the two sides agreedto organise the second meeting of the Sub-Committee on Trade Cooperation inVietnam to speed up initiatives and measures to reach the set target of 1billion USD in two-way trade in 2020.
At the same time, thetwo sides will create favourable conditions for their businesses to seekpartnership, especially in tea, pharmaceuticals, garment, telecommunications,aquatic farming and processing, logistics, education, oil and gas, andconstruction material production.
The Sri Lankan side tooknote of Vietnam’s suggestion on enhancing cooperation in exporting rice andmilk.
The two sides alsovowed to boost ties in culture and tourism.
Vietnam and Sri Lankaagreed to continue working closely together and supporting each other atregional and international forums. Sri Lanka recognised Vietnam’s proposal tosupport Vietnam’s bid to become a non-permanent member of the UN Security Councilin the 2020-2021 tenure.
Sri Lanka also affirmedthe significance of maintaining peace and stability in the East Sea, maritimeand aviation freedom and unhindered trade activities, as well as the settlementof disputes through peaceful measures in line with international law, includingthe UN Convention on the Law of the Sea 1982.
The country proposedenhancing cooperation in maritime security, especially the exchange ofinformation and experience on law enforcement at sea.
On the occasion,Deputy Foreign Minister Quy paid a courtesy call to Sri Lankan Foreign MinisterTilak Marapana who suggested that the two ministries should work with otherministries and agencies to effectively implement outcomes of visits of seniorleaders of both countries as well as signed agreements.
The two sides will coordinateto organise a visit of the Sri Lankan Foreign Minister to Vietnam in the comingtime.-VNA

During the negotiations, the US highly evaluated Vietnam’s goodwill and efforts, affirmed its appreciation for the bilateral relationship, acknowledged Vietnam’s proposals and concerns, and considered these an important basis for continuing discussions and moving towards a final agreement.
