Thua Thien – Hue develops sustainable afforestation

The central province of Thua Thien – Hue targets to plant 13,000 hectares of forests, of which 40 percent meets the global environmentally-friendly standard, by 2020.

Thua Thien-Hue (VNA) – The central province of ThuaThien – Hue targets to plant 13,000 hectares of forests, of which 40 percent meetsthe global environmentally-friendly standard, by 2020.

To realise the targets, the province has set up the ForestOwners Sustainable Development Association (FOSDA) to help protect the legitimaterights and benefits of small forest household owners in sustainableforestry-related activities.

The association encourages forests owners to involve insustainable management of forests in line with the global forest certificationof the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).

Besides, Thua Thien – Hue offers a number of incentives fororganisations and individuals to apply advanced technology in forestryproduction to increase the productivity and quality.

Since 2016, with financial and technical assistance under aproject funded by the World Wide Fundfor Nature (WWF), groups of families and firms who join the FSC certificateshave passed the first assessment conducted by the German GFA Consulting Group. Ofwhich, 14 household groups of 241 members received the FSC certificate for 951 hectaresof forests.

The TienPhong Forestry Company has over 3,096 hectares of forests certified with the FSCcertificate. 

Models of forests with big trees have been developed on 55hectares in the province, with the participation of 34 households in themountainous communes of Hong Ha, Huong Nguyen in A Luoi district; Hong Tien,Binh Thanh, Binh Dien, and Huong Ho in Huong Tra town, using funding from thenational forestry promotion programme.

Two training courses were held for 50 local managers and membersof the FSC-joined groups in the districts and towns of Huong Tra, Huong Thuy,Phong Dien and Phu Loc.-VNA

ౠ PM orders strengthened disaster preparedness ahead of storm season

꧂ Vietnam pioneers use of AI and remote sensing to monitor seawater quality

According to Dr. Vu Anh Tuan, Deputy Director General of the Vietnam Space Centre and head of the project, this is the first study in Vietnam to simultaneously employ Sentinel-2 satellite data, advanced machine learning algorithms, and the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud computing platform to model and monitor key seawater quality parameters.

꧑ Wutip storm ravages central Vietnam, leaving trail of destruction

In 2019, Quang Ninh became one of the first localities in Vietnam to launch a province-wide campaign against plastic waste, mobilising the participation of the political system, the business sector, and the general public. Other localities—such as Hai Phong, Da Nang, Binh Duong, and Ho Chi Minh City—have also effectively implemented waste-sorting initiatives at source, along with models for plastic-free markets and urban areas.
