Tien Giang: CHOBA project helps improve rural sanitation

The Community Hygiene Output-Based Aid (CHOBA) Programme in the southern province of Tien Giang has yielded significant achievements, according to the local Woman’s Union.
The Community Hygiene Output-Based Aid (CHOBA) Programme in thesouthern province of Tien Giang has yielded significant achievements,according to the local Woman’s Union.

As many as 8,300 sanitarytoilets have been built under the programme since 2012 in 55 communes ofthe province, with a total expenditure of over 19.5 billion VND(929,000 USD).

According to Family-Society Department Manager ofthe provincial Women’s Union Ho Thi Tuyet Hong, the programme wasdesigned to improve hygienic conditions for women and children in linewith the goals of the National Target Programme for Rural Water andSanitation through 2020.

The project helps improve hygiene inimpoverished communities and contributes socially and economically,especially in building new-style rural areas, she added.

TheCHOBA project, funded by the East Meets West foundation, assistsimpoverished and disadvantaged families in building new sanitary toiletsto protect the local environment, reduce waterborne diseases, andchange sanitary habits and behaviours.

The project does notdirectly financially support households, but rather awards packs whichare delivered to families once they’ve build hygienic toilets throughpreferential loans.

The project has thus far been conducted in496 communes in 10 provinces nationwide, including Ninh Binh, Hai Duong,Thanh Hoa, Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Tien Giang, Tra Vinh, Dong Thap, HoaBinh and Soc Trang, seeking to improve hygiene for 1.4 million people inrural areas.-VNA
